Every parent must hope their children become successful people in the future, and one of ways to ensure that is send their children to school, but what if it is the other way around? as we have seen lately either on social media or real life about violence, molestation, rape and even murder at school. When school should become a hope of people whether they are low class, middle class or high class to send their next generation, but in contrary school becomes assassin, perhaps you are going to make a statement “do you equate school? No, absolutely but let’s take a look deeply around us what happens is many victims get traumatize, but fortunately they start to stand themselves now, and maybe our daughter, son or any family has become a victim at school. By who? Well, let’s address the elephant in the room, shall we?
We start with what the definition of education either from the philosopher or Ai, but the no less important we have to know what education means for ourselves.
We go to the classical period.
About 428 BCE, there was someone called Plato saying that education the process of drawing out the best in men, of bringing out the best latent capacities of human soul. Plato wanted to point out that education can be way to show what we have inside, then we can be openminded of our life, and we can solve the problem also by thinking the solution. It can be the difference as well between human and animal. Aristotle too had the definition of education, he said that education is the creation of a sound mind in a sound body. As if they both were eager to say that education is part of your body which when you lose one of them, you will be deformed.
Two people are enough to tell us how important education, so that now people are flocking to send their children to school because they believe that investing at education will generate good generation to change their position, in fact, to change their fate. but unfortunately, the fact is too far from the parents’ expectation, their children become worse and victim of killer called “Teacher/Guru/Ustad/sensei”.
How can it happen?
You may have heard grooming, grooming is a process of manipulative and exploitative behaviours used by an individual built a relationship mostly between child or vulnerable adult, for sexual abuse, exploitation, or other forms of harm, grooming can occur online or offline, and has many tactics, including; first, building emotional connections. Second, gift-giving or special treatment. Third, isolation from others. Forth, sexualized conversations or contents. Grooming can be anywhere, especially at school which is formal school like state school or boarding school. Sadly, while we see the video that shows victim of the bad behaviour of teachers, it is not seldom to see that there are still many people standing with the perpetrator. ironically, they sometimes blame the victim by saying or commenting “it is normal that she was raped because her clothes” as if the problem was uniform of the students, why do they not say “the teacher/guru/ustad/sensei must be tasted by psychiatrist before being teacher or others” or “they must be punished or even killed”, that is the reason of the victims are afraid to speak up or stand even though now some of them are brave enough to speak.
how’s the percentage?
in Indonesia especially, In the momentum of National Education Day 2023, the Federation of Indonesian Teachers Unions found that 46.67% of sexual violence cases throughout January-April 2023 occurred at the elementary school/Islamic elementary school level, 13.33% at the junior high school level, 7.67% occurred at vocational schools, and 33.33% at Islamic boarding schools, and university has not been counted yet. It is large numbers that we never imagine before, it can be continued as always because we as parents too believe the school can change our children to be better.
So, how to anticipate it?
First, OBSERVATION, as we now know there are so many schools in Indonesia, even the number of school reach 411.263 including, elementary school, junior high school and senior high school, so we must be careful to sort the school either the facilities or the teachers. Second, TAKE PART, this is vital role that we must do as parents, we should know our children’s activities, and check regularly or ask the teacher how our children at school, do not matter if people say you too spoil your children, because better for us to be berated than feeling regret since our children get trouble or become victim of killer. Third, PRAY, this part is often forgotten by parents, we human are fragile, have limitation, so we must relay on our god as well since we can do nothing when something bad suddenly happen.
Well last part, is school really nightmare?
No, as I mention the first paragraph I do not equate the school, it means the problem is the people who do it not the school, and it is normal to be afraid of bad things, but do not let them make you always afraid, because we have to understand as well that there is something up to us, and there is not up to us, so we can go on our life as nothing has never happened, but we have to anticipate first when it happens, take care, cure our next generation.
