Towards the extinction of local languages in Indonesia

There are about 7 thousand languages which is spoken around the world by many people from different countries, and one those countries is Papua Nugini has the most language in the world that is 840 still spoken by guinean, caught up by Indonesia with 718 languages including local language such as; Java, Sasak, Bali and Minangkabau. Those language demonstrate how rich their country with the differences but still understand one another.

What is the problem of Indonesian people?

The problem comes to some country which has many languages, yet the people do not want to preserve their local language, as the result according to UNESCO; one language becomes extinct every 2 weeks.  Indonesia for example. In Indonesia, there are already 11 regional languages that have been declared extinct. In addition, there are 24 other regional languages that are starting to decline and are threatened with extinction, according to the Language Development and Fostering Agency. Plus Indonesian people tend to learn and speak national and foreign language instead of speaking their mother language, this is a sign of language extinction for us, can be really nothing at all one day if we stop speaking and teaching our own language. Learning or speaking other languages is not a mistake, but it must be conformable with speaking ours.

In java, many young generation do not know how to speak polite language in their own language, and even they do not know speaking java language, ironically but this is the truth when sir Santo who is one of our source persons coming from central java said that he often sees children taught by their parents national language or foreign, he does not blame the parents at all, but he supposed that the parents had better teach their children their mother tongue first like kromo inggil.

Why would it matter to teach and preserve the local language to the next generation?

When we discuss further about different language, it is related with the quote “ if you only rely on one market, then it is very vulnerable to change and can even fail completely” or “relying on one source, then it will be difficult to survive in difficult times”. Imagine that when one country only has one language, it is going to be a problem because every world would be the same meaning ant the people would talk in the same articulation, then we have no idea that they are in bad or good mood or situation when talking.

So, what is the advantage of different language?

With many different languages we are going to understand deeper where they come from what they are, and we will understand one another as well, for example; Batak people will talk loudly like people getting angry, in fact, they are not, Sundanese talks slowly, but does not mean they cannot get angry like Batak people do.

The end of our discussion, what must we do to take care our local language?

Government and School must take over the local language by making a major at school or even university, local language must be preserved to tell our next generation that we have background as diverse countries, so they can go around the world to bring the story of each they belong.

Indian people are proud to tell the story of their country by speaking Hindi, Singapore is proud too to tell everyone what they have though their country is not as big as the island they are located. So, Indonesia has to have their own language to tell the world their story either speaking java, sunda or sasak.

We must believe that there is a place for local language in international.
